The following obituary came from the HAMILTON SPECTATOR (Hamilton, ON F27732N1982MY24) p.x c.x
ATKINSON, James Henry – Died May 21, 1982 at Douglas Memorial Hospital, Fort Erie, in his 72nd year, beloved husband of the late Grace Ethel HEMINGWAY. Dear father of William of Caistorville, James of Alberta, Ethel, Barbara, Shirley and Robert of Hamilton and grandfather to 17 grandchildren. Funeral Services at WILLIAMS Funeral Home, Ridgeway, Ont., at 1:30p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated by the family.
Grace Ethel not Grace Esther; as my mother’s first name was taken from her and her younger sister: Ethel Alice.
From granddad’s obituary: his 17 grandchildren were — three from William (Shelley, Darryl and Dale); four from James (James Jr, Gabrielle, John and Beverley); three from Ethel (Kale, Mark and Karen); two from Barbara (Cheryl and William); three from Shirley (Deborah, Kimberley and Ronald); and two from Robert (Crystal and Robert).
Another obituary appeared later in greater detail after the funeral. This obituary was paid for by James’ sister, Lenore (ATKINSON) MULHOLLAND. It included details of my grandfather’s second marriage, and included his niece and nephews from Stratford, Ontario. I requested a volunteer from Hamilton to locate this latter obit, but without a date of publication, she was unable to find it in the Hamilton Branch OGS indices.
REVISITED May 2016
This obituary is the one referred to in above. There is a third obituary that was published in Fort Erie — that this time I do not have a scanned copy available. (It is pending.).
