Fearless Females (Day 14): He Found Her Lipstick

Jean Burgess ATKINSON was the daughter of Dr. Howard ATKINSON (a veterinarian) and the former Annie Jane RUTHERFORD (a homemaker). She was third born of four children, and the only daughter.

She studied at the University of Toronto and graduated in 1935 “magna cum laude” with a B.A. in physiotherapy.

Working at the Ontario Hospital in Woodstock, Ontario, Jean decided to join the war effort Tuesday, December 1st, 1942.

By 1944, Jean was a Section Officer in the Women’s Division of the Royal Canadian Army, and boarded a plane to Calgary for a new Administration posting.

She never got there.
